Getting Ready

Grooming and Wardrobe are the most important tasks to consider when getting ready for your shoot.

Do not wear Transitions Lenses. The lighting triggers lense to turn into sunglass obscuring your eyes.

Get a haircut about a week before your headshot. This allows time for the hair to grow back and look more natural without harsh fresh cut lines. Your hairstyle should reflect how you look in person. Wash and style your hair as usual with the same products that you use every day.

Wardrobe: Solid colors are better than patterns. This goes for jackets, dress shirts, ties, and polo shirts that is appropriate to your profession or brand.

Keep color choices in the mid-tone range, plain colors are the best. Avoid flesh tones, beige, peach, browns, or yellows. No logos or graphic-Tees unless it’s an integral part of your story or brand.

Please make sure the clothes are wrinkle-free and clean. Inspect the garment closely for loose threads, missing buttons and wrinkles. Try it on and give it a close look in the mirror making sure it fits.

Avoid transparent clothing.

Makeup should be a light to medium enhancing your look without appearing overdone or unnatural. When in doubt, go with less makeup. Bring your makeup and hair products with you for touch-ups.

Men typically do not pay attention to the tiny details when it comes to their appearance- we’ve identified a few things to guide men through getting ready for a shoot.

If you’re getting your hair cut, this is the time to talk to your barber or stylist about trimming nose and ear hair, and shaping unruly eyebrows.

If your daily routine includes shaving your head then do it the day of your session. If you shave your head every few days wait.

Know your skin type and avoid razor burn. Keep your look groomed and professional. Consider indulging in a professional shave. Do not ignore nose hair, ear hair, or untrimmed eyebrows, it’s really important.

If your shirt fabric is light weight, wear an undershirt.

Avoid puffed sleeves and cowl neck blouses, anything that makes you look wider. If this is a portrait or corporate shoot avoid sleeveless and sheer outfits.
